St. Bernard-Elmwood Place High School Reviews

I believe if a student wants to get an education to where they are ready for college... ' go somewhere else .'

The teachers and principals worry and care more about less important things than the actual education that the students get. The so called 'helpful' dress code isn't so 'helpful' at all. Kids still get made fun of and it's actually a lot worse than before. The teachers and principals care more about you wearing the correct clothes than if you're passing the classes your in. You can go to class and just sit there and do nothing but you're wearin dress code you're okay. But if you go to class everyday and do all your work and then one day your shirt comes up a little too far to show one half of an inch on your back you get sent out of class and have to wait for someone to bring you a shirt. I find this pointless.

St. Bernard-Elmwood Place HS has many problems but not good ways to solve them. The Board of Education isn't involved in the right things at the school. We don't have funding to do many extracuricular activities. They gave the students a 'dress code' because they said it would solve the problems with teasing other children. The only problem is that kids still get made fun of for their shoes and name-brand clothes. The Asst. principal keeps telling us to 'stay off the Friday school list' She cracks down on the dumb stuff. Most of it has to do with dress code. Nothing is ever taken care of at this school. The discipline needs work. There are hardly ever any parents involved. Overall the school needs work.

I found that this school overall has an adequate educational program. The staff appears to be well trained and generally caring for the students. Administration, on the other hand, can be difficult to communicate with when dealing with student related issues. The curriculum itself appears to be geared for three levels of education: a) special needs, b) average, and c) slightly above average (i.e., college prep-supposedly). There seems to be some level of nepotism in the school district itself. The president of the board of education is married to the Jr. Varisty basketball coach (retired), and their son is the Varsity Basketball coach. An adequate to good education can be found here, but parent involvement appears to be key to accessing such an education.
