Werkhaus Pizza: Fresh homemade pizza and pastas

A giant porcelain pig from Cincinnati’s Flying Pig public art project greets customers out front.  Drive along Werk Road and see the pig that used to hold a tray, presumably ready to serve up delicious pasta, pizza and hoagies from The Werkhaus.

The pig needs some painting now, and so does the interior of the Werkhaus. The faux painted turquoise walls will soon be replaced by warm chocolate brown tones. The inviting new atmosphere will be a fitting match for the inviting family owned Werkhaus Restaurant.

Enter the cozy building, once a friendly, quaint house, and a charming host will seat you. She may even recommend what to order -- the Spinach Stuffed Pizza: “It’s won awards. People love it!” The deep dish pizza’s two layers of light dough is loaded with three cheeses, chopped spinach and mushrooms, and topped with the Werkhaus’s own chunky tomato sauce. The Calzone is a popular choice too, one the menu admonishes: “If you haven’t tried them, shame on you!” It’s an odd statement on a menu, but good advice. The calzones have a tender crust, fresh ingredients, a lightly garlic taste and lots of cheese.

The Werkhaus also prides itself on its soups. As the owner says, “If you like mock turtle soup, you’ve got to try ours.” And it’s indeed delicious-- meaty, well seasoned with tender noodles. It’s homemade, as are all the foods at the Werkhaus.

Enjoy your meal with a drink. In addition to soft drinks, and Hi-C, the restaurant offers a full range of beers and wine along with mixed drinks.

Be sure to save room for dessert, also homemade.  Seasonal specialties have guests stalking the place at certain times of the year, but everyone’s sweet tooth will find pure satisfaction in the year round items , including Carrot Cake, Cheese Cake, Chocolate Chip Caramel Brownies and Double Lemon Pie, featuring a light lemony Meringue, atop a zesty lemon cream and a sweet graham cracker crust.

HelloCincinnati Tip: Take advantage of the many specials at the Werkhaus including the Endless Pasta.  Enjoy salad and bread and endless helpings of Spaghetti or Mostacolli for  $7.99.
