The Mt. Adams Bar & Grill takes pride in its infamous past. A speakeasy during Prohibition, the Mt. Adams Bar & Grill served bootleg liquor during the Depression, distilled by its notorious owner George Remus.
Remus, a Chicago criminal attorney, acquired millions from his illegal business, killed his wife when she filed for divorce, and then got a quick release from all the consequences with an insanity plea.
Read the story on the front of the menu when you visit the Mt. Adams, now a upcale place alive with the sounds of business lunches and dinners as well as friends and families getting together. The atmosphere and people have changed, but the sense of history remains in the restaurant’s architectural charms.
Enter the front room of glass, mirrors and a smooth, high-gloss bar. Vintage lights hang from the ornate ceiling and an intricately tiled floor leads to a maze of halls, doorways, and rooms. Some rooms are tiny and intimate, others feature exposed brick walls, and others still are lined with black-and-white signed celebrity photos.
The Patio Room shines with stained glass, antique light fixtures and large windows that showcase the outdoors: The Blind Lemon’s patio, and the neighboring buildings with their charming shutters and colorful window boxes.
Relax in the comfortable rustic chairs with soft cushioned seats and enjoy the restaurant’s quick and efficient service. The menu offers a large variety of soups, salads and sandwiches, along with “Heartier Fare,” including pastas, seafood, and chicken dishes. Complete bar service is available throughout the restaurant and diners can also enjoy a wide variety of coffee drinks.
