Peer out over the tops of trees, scan the sky, the land, and the river below. Spy into the distance at Shawnee Lookout, and experience the past, surveying the area just as Hopewell Indians did 2,000 years ago.
Shawnee Lookout, one of Hamilton County’s more modest parks, boasts historical significance as “the largest continuously occupied hilltop settlement established by any Native American group.” New evidence found by teams of researchers from UC show direct links from the ancient Hopewells to the Shawnee people who were living there during the American Revolution.
Hike on nature trails throughout the park’s 1,515 acres and learn more about the Hopewells and Shawnees at the visitor center with its artifacts, explanatory charts and archeological exhibits. (There are also more modern items, like restrooms, here in the visitor center). Discover more about history in the Springhouse School and Log Cabin, two buildings that give visitors opportunities to see how early pioneer settlers lived.
After you’ve absorbed Shawnee Lookout’s historical and educational features, relax and have some fun. Do some fishing from the bank, slide and swing at the playgrounds, or have a snack at one of the many picnic tables or at a reservable shelter.
Better still, take advantage of Shawnee’s biggest attraction, its 18-hole golf course. The par 70 course offers club and cart rental from the Shawnee Centre, which serves as a clubhouse, pro shop and snack bar. Shawnee Lookout Golf Course features 6,016 yards of wooded, hilly terrain, wicked sand traps and scenic views of Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky.
