At the corner of one of Cincinnati’s busiest traffic intersections lies one of its finest treasures: the Farbach-Werner Nature Preserve. The 22-acre Farbach-Werner Nature Preserve oasis of green space offers sanctuary in the suburbs from Colerain Avenue’s congested traffic, not to mention the frenetic pace of ordinary modern life.
While its proximity to businesses and shopping means that you can hear sirens and street noises, and even catch an unfortunate view of a Home Depot store from the trail when the trees lose their leaves, the preserve's location also helps make it exceptionally appealing to residents of the Queen City. The preserve is near where people live and work, and its proximity offers an easy escape from daily stresses.
Visit any morning, afternoon or evening, during snow, rain or brilliant sunshine, and find people on Farbach-Werner’s Pin-Oak trail, taking a hike or walking their dogs. The trail meanders past many wonderful sights and is flat and well-suited for any fitness level.
The trail crosses a charming bridge that overlooks a pond, which provides a home for fish, ducks, frogs and other wildlife. There are also native wildflowers and plants, and butterfly gardens, alive with beauty and color throughout the summer and autumn.
Learn more about wildlife at the preserve's nature programs hosted in Farbach-Werner’s outdoor classroom and in its Ellenwood Nature Barn. While you’re there, pick up a copy of the Hamilton County Parks brochure to find out about upcoming programs. And before leaving the nature preserve, be sure to stop in the Nature’s Niche Gift Store, where items such as bird feeders and seed, along with nature inspired gifts and cards.
HelloCincinnati Tip: Be sure to buy your annual preserve Motor Vehicle Permit soon. Daily parking costs $3, but an annual permit costs just $10, and includes park coupons worth up to $30.
