Geese honk, birds sing and the water crashes from the fountain. Water laps against the banks as a child splashes rocks into the pond. Despite the noise of cars rushing along the road, and planes soaring overhead, the pond at Delhi Park provides a pleasant retreat within the hubbub of the suburbs.
Recent drought conditions have affected the once green lawns, but the flowers are lush, and butterflies flutter among the lavender and roses. Rocks and boulders provide a place to relax, along with benches and picnic tables.
Walkers, runners and joggers enjoy Delhi Park’s scenic and well-paved pathways, but the park’s many amenities, on more than 50 acres of land, provide many more opportunities for exercise. Teams enjoy soccer, baseball and softball, and even football here. Two tennis courts invite players to serve, volley and score. Players should note that the surface and nets here are in good shape, but they may need to chase a few balls, as the fence needs some repairs.
The situation is far worse for basketball players. Six backboards line the court area along with a sign: “Please do not hang on rims.” The sign is pretty irrelevant now. There are no rims. Or nets. There are simply no baskets for basketball players.
But there is a great place for skateboarders. A long list of rules restricts some behaviors, but adventurous skaters can try many tricks and perfect their moves on the plaza designed by local skaters. Features include a kinked box, curved ledge and multiple ledges over banks.
